Mentor Information
Team Mentors are an Extension of the TNT Staff!
We appreciate your continued support to the success of Team In Training and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?s mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin?s disease, and myeloma and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
One of the most important volunteer roles is that of the Team Mentor. Team mentors are past participants who volunteer to support a group of participants throughout a recruitment season. Each Team Mentor is responsible for supporting a group of participants, assisting each participant to establish a solid fundraising plan, keeping them informed of important program details, and acting liaison between the participants, coaches and staff. The Team Mentors are chosen by the TNT staff and are a valuable asset to the TNT program overall due to their personal successes within the TNT program.
The criteria in selecting a Team Mentor includes:
- Past participants who have been successful in their fundraising
- Past participants who have been successful in their training
- Trustworthy, personable and professional
- Positive attitudes
- Friendly, outgoing, and reliable
- Wants to be a Team Mentor to support the current participants fundraising endeavors
Team Mentor Program Overview
Purpose of the Team Mentor Program:
The purpose of Team Mentors is to provide ongoing support for all TNT participants so that they are able to successfully meet and exceed their fundraising and training goals, as well as complete the program with a high level of satisfaction and success. Team Mentors are truly an extension of the Team In Training staff! A Team Mentor provides encouragement, support and insight to the TNT program. Establishing a clear communication system is key to a successful Mentor Program.
Goals and Objectives for each Team In Training Participant:
- Raise at least the designated minimum of funds
- Attend at least 75% of the coach-led training sessions and other team events
- Complete the target event
- Experience a sense of team spirit and camaraderie
- Feel supported in accomplishing these goals
- Receive one-on-one attention throughout the program
Keys to being a Great Team Mentor:
Establish a good working relationship with participants. It is imperative that each Team Mentor contact their participants early and begin developing relationships with them. It is most critical that participants feel connected with the program during the first few weeks of the season. The more ?bonded? they feel with their team, Team Mentor and Coach, the more likely they are to continue with the program.
Positive responses from past participants indicate that they appreciate when their Team Mentors have gone beyond the basics and reached out to them in creative ways. Some Team Mentors have brunches or meet for dinner. Some organize weeknight workouts for their participants. Some have sent newsletters or postcards with team updates and encouraging quotes and cartoons.
