Prerequisites
The Team In Training® (TNT) cross-country ski program is open to
participants with any and all levels of skiing experience and fitness - from
absolute beginners to experienced racers. Advanced participants may choose
"skate" style skiing. Within each program, participants are divided into
training groups by preferred skiing speed. Participants should be ready to hike
or jog two to four miles at the first team training.
Training Program
TNT ski coaches have designed a
four-month training program that prepares participants for the Tour of
Anchorage X Country Ski Marathon. Participants will train and ski with
their coaches at biweekly ski training sessions. The head coach is also
available throughout the week to answer training and fitness-related
questions.
There will be one coached workout every two weeks, always on Saturday.
These sessions will include group lessons on the mechanics of traditional
and skate skiing. The coached workouts are typically held at Royal Gorge
and Bear Valley Cross Country Ski Areas. Additionally, there will be "buddy
skiing" at resorts and "cross training" in the Bay Area on the non-coached
weekend days
Participants receive a complete workout schedule for the season. Three
levels of program are provided for participants with different levels of
enthusiasm and amounts of available time. A typical workout week includes
two aerobic conditioning days (you choose hiking, running, cycling, inline
skating, roller skiing, etc.), two strength-training days and a day off in
addition to at least one weekend ski day. Our training programs focuses on
enhancing participants' fitness, strength, endurance and technical ability.
In addition to time spent skiing, other fitness activities, stretching,
injury prevention, equipment choice, equipment maintenance and nutrition
are integral to the program. Training clinics are held throughout the
season regarding these topics.
Coaches
The TNT cross-country ski programs offers a
qualified and dedicated group of team leaders in the Bay Area, as well as
the most experienced and qualified resort instructors in the ski industry.
Our team leaders were selected for their experience, professionalism,
knowledge and enthusiasm, as well as their devotion to Team In Training and
to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society' s mission. All have extensive
skiing experience and have proven themselves in numerous athletic
endeavors.
Mentors
TNT cross-country ski participants will be
matched in an approximate 8-1 ratio with a past TNT participant. The mentor
will serve as a resource and peer advisor, encouraging
team members throughout the training and fundraising season.
Honorees
TNT members train and raise funds in honor
of a local resident who has been affected by a blood cancer. Your honoree
becomes your inspiration as you work toward goals that will better both of
your lives. We provide each ski participant with a wristband to wear with
the team honoree' s name.
