Louie was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) at the age of 32. He battled CML for 4.5 years. Louie joined Team In Training in 1999 not only as an honored patient, but also as an active participant. When asked why, he said, "Because I want to show people that you can still live, even when they tell you you're going to die". He finished Ironman Canada in 2001 with only 3.5 minutes left before the official cutoff.
By January 2002, his condition had accelerated, but Louie pushed himself when he was asked to carry the Olympic Torch. Two days later on January 22, 2002, Louie passed away.
In his lifetime, Louie trained for, entered and finished nine triathlons, one courageous step at a time -- and inspired hundreds of others to conquer their own personal challenges and milestones. He is a true hero and represents all that Team In Training stands for.

"TNT introduces you to great people, fun sports, new places and one amazing cause. I joined their cycle team last year, and although it was pretty much my first time on a bike, they were able to condition me for a 100-mile ride through the intense terrains of Utah. Joining TNT is one of the best things I have ever done in my life."

"Team In Training is absolutely the way to go if you're up for endurance training, plus the cause is enough to get you out of bed on Saturdays at 6 a.m. The coaches helped me learn proper technique, the captains kept us in order, the mentors kept us smiling and the honorees kept us motivated. It's a really great way to connect and do some good for others and for yourself."

"I am now going into my 7th season with Team In Training. I've run marathons without them, but it was not the same. The camaraderie that comes from training with a team, especially TNT, is essential. You'll not only get world class coaching to guide you to the finish line but you'll be making a difference in the lives of patients with cancer. If you are thinking of running a marathon or completing an endurance please consider signing up with TNT. You can do it and you can make a difference."

"Thank you so much Team In Training! I know without making the commitment upfront & the valuable information provided by mentors and coaches the odds of completing this would not have been in my favor. 3 Months later - I am now a non-smoker and a runner. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I can't wait for the next challenge"

"When I was first diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma on Thanksgiving in 1987, my oncologist gave me 'six-to-24 months' to live. 23 years later, I'm going strong and a proud member of marathon, hike, and ski teams! I wrote this poem as a thank you to my teammates:
"Thanks to Team In Training
I want to thank you up and down--I want to thank you rich and poor,
I want to thank you cold and warm, and those not training any more!
Thanks for pushing to the limit, thanks for raising funds so high.
Thanks for hiking, running, skiing up those hills, so far and wide.
Thanks for working all together, thanks for following coach's lead.
Thanks for understanding, somehow, what lymphoma can mean to me,
or to your loved one who has had leukemia or myeloma--it's bad!
Lymphoma and blood cancer I'm sorry I have had.
It's very bad to have blood cancer; that is not a tale.
But having folks like you behind us makes us all regale.
I can delight in your great efforts, laughing with you as you stride,
from start line to your finish, I feel I'm at your side.
You'll have a time not to forget--push your body to its limit.
You'll achieve a new life goal, and help those who are "in it."
Research comes and research goes, and many will endure...
I am here and thanking you for every day, be sure.
I've had old treatments in "Dark Ages" when sickness was the norm.
I've endured torturous "cures," just like a Biblical storm.
I've had new treatments... and clinical trials are not strangers to my life.
Your money raised will get us closer to treating cancer with less strife."- Lior J.

"Walking is an amazing sport because it gives you more time to truly appreciate the scenery. The ability to carry on conversation with fellow participants while exercising helps keep you motivated and entertained. Prior to Team In Training I had never formally trained for an event or had support throughout the process. Now I am able to complete a full marathon, and feel great as I continue to build on my strength and speed. Joining the Team made me discover my inner strength."

"TNT is a great community. The coaches and participants are fun and inspirational. The experience is very rewarding - you're raising money for a good cause, while getting fit and having a good time. You will NOT be judged! TNT attracts and embraces all shapes, sizes and abilities"
