The Mission

LLS's Team In Training (TNT), the world's first and largest charity sports training program, provides coaching and support for approximately 39,000 people annually to cross finish lines at marathons, triathlons, century rides, hike and cross-country ski events.

The need is critical: More than 894,000 Americans have leukemia, Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphoma or myeloma. Every four minutes, someone new is diagnosed with blood cancer. Every 10 minutes, someone dies.

Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children under the age of 20. Lymphomas are the most common blood cancers and incidence increases with age. The survival rate for myeloma is only 35 percent.

Through TNT, over 400,000 participants have raised close to $1 billion for lifesaving cancer research. As soon as you join the Team you receive a personal fundraising webpage and online access to guidelines, tips and sample letters. You are also assigned a mentor who helps foster your training and fundraising skills. At Kickoff you receive additional fundraising information and throughout the season your team manager provides you with ongoing fundraising support.

Patient Heroes (Honorees)

You train and raise funds in honor of Bay Area residents whose lives have been affected by blood cancers. As you get to know your honorees and their families at trainings and team socials, you gain inspiration from their stories. We provide you with a wristband to wear with your honorees' names to remind you of the important cause for which you are training and fundraising.

Training Locations and Program

The SF/Marin Triathlon Team trains in Marin and San Francisco Counties. The East Bay Triathlon Team trains in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. The Redwood/Wine Country Triathlon Team trains in Napa, Marin and Sonoma Counties. The Solano Triathlon Team trains in Solano County. Each team trains one weeknight in their respective area and hold their weekend morning trainings in their region. On the days when there is no coach workout, volunteer captains will lead informal rides and runs. For training in the South Bay, Santa Cruz or Monterey areas, call our Silicon Valley/Monterey Bay Area Chapter at (408) 271-2873.

TNT will provide you with a non-competitive, comprehensive training program to prepare you to complete a triathlon. The program is designed with the busy person in mind, so most weekday workouts are 45-90 minutes or less, with longer workouts reserved for the weekend.

Designed and implemented by professional triathlon coaches, the training program consists of 15-22 weeks of daily workouts tailored to multiple ability levels. A typical workout week includes two swim days, two run days, two biking days and a rest day; at many coached workouts there are information clinics that cover hydration, nutrition, injury prevention and equipment.

Prerequisites

TNT welcomes all levels of experience. Our training program is designed to turn the non-athlete into an endurance event finisher and to help seasoned athletes meet their training goals. Prior to Kickoff, you should meet the following prerequisites:

  • Sprint Distance: Swim one length with face comfortably in water and able to ride a bike comfortably.
  • Olympic Distance: Swim 200 yards with 10 seconds rest between lengths, bike for 30 minutes and run a mile in 13 minutes.
  • Half Ironman: Swim 200 yards without stopping, bike 20 miles in two hours and run four miles in 50 minutes.

Support: TNT Mentors, Captains and Staff

  • Your mentor is a past-participant serving as a resource and peer advisor. If you have questions about training or fundraising, your mentor is your first point of contact. Participants are matched with mentors in an approximate eight-to-one ratio.
  • Captains are past participants who organize informal trainings, help coordinate the honoree program, create team Web sites, and promote team spirit and camaraderie.
  • TNT Team Managers (LLS staff) attend some coached trainings and maintain office hours at LLS during the week.
