An Ironman is 140.6 miles: 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run.
Ironman is a brand of Iron distance races that is most recognized in the triathlon community. With 27 events world wide it is the largest organization putting on Iron Distance races and the host of the Ironman World Championships in Kona every year.
On February 18, 1978, John and Judy Collins, triathletes from California, introduced triathlon to Hawaii by creating and staging the first endurance triathlon, the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon, a swim/bike/run course that circled the island of Oahu. The Ironman course linked the 2.4 mile Waikiki Roughwater Swim, an estimated 112-miles of the 115-mile Round Oahu Bike Course and the 26.2 mile Honolulu Marathon.
Yes. Ironman is doable for anybody that has the desire to complete the pinnacle 140.6 distance. As long as you have a solid training program completing an Ironman is within the grasp of anybody.
Team In Training works with every athlete to ensure they will be successful. We will provide weekly, coach led, swimming practices. At the beginning of the season swim practice will consist of swimming laps and drills in the pool, then we'll move to local lakes or rivers for open water practices. As with all three of the sports, we will gradually increase distance throughout the season to prepare you for your event.
While we do recommend that you have completed at least one endurance event before training for an Ironman, it is not necessary to have completed a full distance in all three sports. Many triathletes that have crossed the finish line at Ironman have never completed a marathon and you don't need to in order to complete an Ironman. The 4th place womens finisher at Kona in 2010 had never done a marathon!
It is not necessary to have completed a tri before training for Ironman. We have seen several athletes complete their first triathlon at Ironman events. During the training season we will suggest at least two local triathlons for the team to practice at to help make sure that you are ready!
It is not necessary to have a triathlon bike to complete an Ironman. As a matter of fact it was not till the mid 2000s that tri bikes became widely used in the sport of triathlon. You can complete the event on a good road bike. Our coaches will check for proper bike fit on all bikes to ensure that you complete 112 miles as comfortably and fast as you can.
TNT will offer a 10 month training program featuring a base phase, build phase and race phase. We'll progressively add distance to prepare you for the event.
Yes, to be considered an official Ironman finisher, you must finish all three sports in 17 hours.
To the contrary Ironman Arizona is one of the fastest and coolest courses on the Ironman Circuit. In 2010 Chrissie Wellington broke the Ironman Women's World Record in Arizona! The temps are usually very mild and little to no humidity helps, too.
