Team In Training® (TNT) has more than 1,100 coaches working throughout the United States and Canada to help get participants in proper shape to complete a marathon, half-marathon, hiking adventure, triathlon or 100-mile (century) bicycle ride. They are a resource for every facet of the TNT experience, from purchasing the right apparel to improving racing technique and diet.
Coaches travel with their teams to each event and are along the race route to encourage and guide the athletes. The program's head coaches include some of the nation's top endurance sports innovators.

Marty conceived of the idea of a sporting goods store that sold only athletic shoes. He created the Athletic Attic chain, which grew to 250 stores by 1980. As a broadcaster, Marty has covered six Olympics, 25 New York City Marathons, eight Ironman triathlons and numerous other sports events. He is currently host and producer of Saucony Running and Racing on ESPN. "I was asked to be (TNT) chairman because of my work as an ESPN commentator and former world class runner," he said. "Ironically, a few months later I was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. I was now beyond just volunteering. I realized that the work of LLS through Team In Training was helping me. I learned how important this program is rather quickly. Fortunately, others had been working on these cures before I came along." |

Through his books and his Runner's World column, John has inspired a generation of new runners to find joy in walking, running and racing. His transformation from a life of "sedentary confinement" to marathoner has become a model for people of all ages and abilities. Once an overweight couch potato, he looked mid-life in the face-and got moving. Since then, he has participated in more than 36 marathons and hundreds of 5K and 10K races. In true cross-country fashion, John criss-crossed the country for the fifth summer this year, leading marathon pace groups, speaking to packed rooms of runners of all levels and guiding an ever-growing number of fans on his Internet virtual training groups - the Courage to Start, the Penguin Brigade and Team Penguin. The touring is necessary, he believes, to keep in touch with the hearts and souls of the second running boomers whose advocate he is become. John is honorary race director of Elite Racing's Country Music MarathonTM in Nashville, TN, and a founder of the Rock 'n' Roll Half MarathonTM in Virginia Beach. In the past five years, he has been a featured speaker and clinician at a number of marathons throughout the country. His book, The Courage to Start: A Guide to Running for Your Life, has been among the Top 10 running books since its publication in April 1999. John's most recent book, No Need for Speed: A Beginner's Guide to the Joy of Running, was released in April 2002. |
