Two Marathons And Lot Of Hope

After learning that her beautiful 3 ½ year old goddaughter, Kate, was diagnosed with leukemia, Debbie Pilalas sprung into action.  Having left the sport of running years ago, Debbie decided it was time to support her beautiful goddaughter and train for a marathon.

When Debbie first learned of Kate's diagnosis she was shocked.  "I was helpless and I was angry.  I knew little about leukemia, I had no idea about the statistics or the treatment protocols or the prognoses or the survival rates.  I had to do something immediately."

She turned to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for help and became a part of Team In Training.  She decided to show Kate that with dedication and belief in yourself, you could conquer any challenge.  And conquer she has!

Since the time of Kate's diagnosis, Debbie has completed two full marathons and was the Society's top fundraiser for both the San Diego Rock n' Roll Marathon in June and the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco this October.  In total Debbie has raised more than $130,000 during her training in relentless support of Kate and all those who are faced with blood cancers.

"We need to work so that we can provide all those affected by cancer with a brighter tomorrow and a limitless future.  For every one of us, I hope that each step towards the finish line is a step closer to our ultimate goal, a cure!" says Debbie.

As a true inspiration to everyone involved with the Society, Debbie has shown that with hard work and dedication you can make a difference - bringing optimism and hope to us all.
