Training
Run: A participant for the run team will typically run for long distances without stopping for a break. For some, the only time they will switch from running to brief walk is a fluid stop. Run volunteers will typically complete a 26.2 mile event within the 3 ½ - 6 ½ hour time range depending on their pace per mile.
Walk: A volunteer for the walk team will use walk strategies to complete a marathon (26.2 miles) within 7 hours or a half marathon (13.1 miles) in less than 4 hours. We offer clinics to help volunteers improve their techniques and mileage times. The Walk team includes race walkers, power walkers and purposeful steady walkers. It is by no means "mall walking."
Walk/Run: A volunteer for the run/walk team will utilize a strategy of running a predetermined amount repeatedly followed by a predetermined walk amount. A combined run/walk participant will typically run for 60-90% of the time. One of the benefits of this strategy is typically being able to cover a long distance in less time than if trying to run until exhaustion necessitates walking. A healthy run/walker can expect to finish a marathon in 5:45-6:30 and a half marathon in 2:30-3:15.
