ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY AREA
Nancy Cooper - Head Coach

I have been involved with TNT since 1998, when my friend's son was diagnosed with leukemia. I am happy to say that he beat the battle with leukemia and is a happy teenager today.   I started as a participant, than became a mentor and I am now returning for my 7th season as a coach. I have run over 10 marathons and as many half-marathons, numerous triathlons including an Ironman, and an ultra marathon 50 mile run.  My goal is to get everyone across the finish line with a smile on their face. I enjoy sharing my knowledge of training and nutrition to help everyone succeed. But more importantly is the fun, the camaraderie and the friends that we make during our trainings and keep for life. Come join our team - it  will make a difference for those fighting blood cancers - and it will change your life.

BALTIMORE AREA
Brian Souders - Head Coach, Spring and Summer Season

Hi everyone, my name is Brian Souders, and I am the Baltimore Area Run Coach.  I was once just like you; I came to an information session in downtown Baltimore curious about the organization, and left having signed up for the Mayor's Midnight Marathon in Anchorage in June 2002.  I came to the meeting to remember a high school friend, Elaine Frey, who died unexpectedly from an undiagnosed lymphoma.   While that marathon was my second, I was amazed at the spirit and enthusiasm of the purple wave as it wandered through the brilliant Alaska sun that day and was hooked on both running marathons and on supporting the mission of Team in Training in its battle to fight blood-related cancers.  I have been honored to be the Baltimore Area run coach for two years, and am looking forward to helping you finish your event with our amazing team of mentors and our fantastic TNT staff.
Since then I have participated in two Baltimore Marathons for TNT, and have served as a mentor for multiple TNT participants.  In addition, I have run a total of 15 marathons, a few half marathons, and will be raising funds for his first TNT triathlon event, the Eagleman Half-Ironman in June 2008.  In my work life, I am the director of study abroad at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and, when I get bored, I am finishing my Ph. D. at UMBC in Language, Literacy and Culture.  I am committed to getting you across the finish line at your event, arms raised, feeling strong and hopefully with a smile on your face, enjoying your first TNT event as much as I did.

Pat Dawson - Head Coach, Winter Season

In January 2005, Pat completed her first endurance event, when as a member of Team In Training; she used the walk/run method to complete the Walt Disney Half-Marathon while raising funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Pat continued raising funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as she completed the Baltimore Marathon Relay in 2005.   In 2006, Pat completed her first full marathon at the Mayor's Marathon in Anchorage , Alaska , again raising funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Pat served as a mentor for Team In Training for the '05 season after completing her first half-marathon, '06 season for the Arizona Rock 'N' Roll Half/Full Marathon, and served as a coaching assistant for the '06 summer season events:  Rock 'N' Roll Marathon in San Diego, Mayor's Marathon and Half Marathon in Alaska , and the Delaware Marathon Relay.  With one marathon, seven half marathons, and one relay completed, Pat is set her sights on a new goal which she accomplished, completing the IronGirl Columbia Women's Triathlon in August, 2007.  The winter season will be Pat's first season as the Baltimore area HEAD COACH!

Kevin Dolan - Run Coach, Winter Season

Kevin Dolan has been coaching for Team in Training since 2005. He started with the marathon teams and in 2007 branched out to work with the Triathlon teams also.

Kevin's athletic background includes 30 years of running, cycling and triathlon racing.

Currently he has  completed 17 marathons or ultra marathons  including four Boston Marathons  and the 1983 Triathlon World Championships and two Ironman Triathlons finishes to his credit. In 2006 was listed as a USA Triathlon's Age group All American. One of the most unique events he participated in was setting a Guinness World Record with the Baltimore Road Runners Club.  100 people running 1 mile each in a relay on the Towson University Track in 1982.

He believes the cross training that triathlon provides lends itself to reduced injuries and a healthy lifestyle. Kevin began coaching with the Team in Training after learning of the program and meeting the some of the athletes while doing clinics for the TNT triathlon teams. As he says "The greatest satisfaction of working with Team in Training is getting to meet and work with new athletes who are just learning of their potential. Many people come to Team in Training with a goal to complete an endurance event in honor of someone who is battling Leukemia or Lymphoma. The participant may not be sure they will actually be able to complete the event, but to see their joy when they cross the finish line is priceless." Kevin coaches running in the Baltimore County area and Triathlon in the Howard County areas for Team in Training.

Scott Smith - Head Coach

I have been with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's premier fundraising program, Team In Training for eight years. In addition to coaching, I am a teacher in the Baltimore County school system and a certified personal trainer at Quest Fitness in Harford County.  I am an avid runner and I thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to be able to work with TNT participants of all fitness levels. I have competed in 24 marathons and more than 30 half marathons.
I understand what it takes to develop the endurance to complete distance events and I have been very successful in helping other to reach and exceed their fitness goals.
Through my education and experiences I have gained useful tools, which allow me to help others. I've been fortunate to work with individuals from mentors and alumni to participants and colleagues who have had a variety of experiences and skill levels.
I enjoy working with everyone no matter how much experience you may or may not have, regardless of your physical abilities and fitness levels.  My goal as a coach is to have you cross the finish line happy and healthy. I will make sure your life is in good hands while you work to save the lives of others.

HOWARD COUNTY AREA

Mohan Ray - Head Coach

I went to a TNT information meeting on January 24, 1997 , I listened to the father  who lost his 3 year old  boy to Leukemia.. His sad story touched my heart and I was convinced  that so much more needs to be done to find a cure. I  registered  to walk Alaska half marathon instantly since I was not sure whether I was going to be able to do a  full marathon. As I started training with the Team, I  realized only in two months that I can do a full marathon. I switched to walk the full marathon.  So on June 21, 1997, I walked my very first full marathon for Team In Training, it was a dream come true , I raised $4000 and became an alumni.

I had stayed on to help as a mentor, coaching assistant for many years and kept doing more and more events for TNT by fundraising.  I became a runner in 1998 and I have completed 29 marathons to this date, twenty of them are for Team In Training.  I am a different person,  all for the better because of TNT,  I can take any challenge in life and I am strong enough to handle any difficulty  in daily activities. I always look at the bigger picture that I am so blessed to be able keep helping Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and making a difference.

I was given the opportunity to start the Howard County Team in 2002. I did that and it worked so well that Team was made official by LLS in the fall of 2003, we are celebrating  5th anniversary now in 2008 ,  Howard County Team is a very large team with highest number of alumni participants in the State.  I  am currently run coach for the Howard County Team for the Winter season for  Disney and Arizona marathon and half marathon. My goal for all my participants to reach to their highest potential in both fundraising and  running. The way to do that is pull in all the resources that are available to me as a coach, use them on new and alumni participants to keep everyone motivated, happy and enjoying every day with Team In Training.

SALISBURY AREA
Joe Filipiak

Coach Joe Filipiak joined TNT as a participant in the summer of 2002 and began coaching in 2004. Joe joined TNT to help contribute to the fight against cancer and help other achieve their goals in completing a long distance event.  Coach Joe competed in college, running both track & cross country and ran his first marathon in 1977 in New York City and qualified for the Boston Marathon. Over the past 5 years he has gotten back on track and began running competitively and recently qualified for the Boston Marathon with a time of 3:08.  Joe believes the hardest part about training to compete in a long distance event is to get to the starting line healthy. If you stick to the schedule and listen to your body and your coach you will be well on the way to achieving your goals.
