Team Effort
- John Bryant, Runner's World (July '11)
Last year, at thousands of events, American runners raised more than $650 million to fight cancer. Why does the Big C unite the running world like no other cause? And how much good have we done?
ONLY TWO MORE WEEKS UNTIL the Portland Marathon, which means my Team in Training group will meet for just two more workouts. Two more weeks of high-fives and Go Teams! Two more weeks of sharing stories and sharing pain--as we'll do once again on this mid-September Saturday, in a vintage Oregon drizzle. Read article...
Rolfsen Sets New Goal for Charity Collection
- George Morris, 2TheAdvocate.com
Residents of Westminster, Pine Park and nearby subdivisions know what is coming when they see Rose Rolfsen walking to their front doors.
"It's got to the point where they either run (away) or they say, 'Just a minute. Let me get my wallet,' " Rolfsen said.
Consider this fair warning: Rolfsen is coming back. And her neighbors only thought she was motivated on those previous visits.
Having raised more than $50,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during the past five years, Rolfsen took up a challenge from one of her children: Increase that total to $80,000 before she turns 80. Read article...

Non-runner pursues running marathon
- Erin Priddy, Savannah Morning News.
Thanks to a fast metabolism and a complete lack of motivation, I've generally been able to manage a sloth-like existence without much difficulty or repercussion.
This continued until about a month before my 25th birthday. That's when I finally had a "eureka" moment that I was too young for high cholesterol and those crazy doctors could be on to something. Maybe I should exercise after all. Read article...
Former Marine improves lives from bicycle seat
74-year-old pedals more than 3,000 miles per year for health, charities
- Vikki Conwell, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Through bumps and breaks, weather and war, Donald Schaet has kept the wheels of his bicycle rolling. As a youth growing up in northern New Jersey during World War II, Schaet could not purchase a bike because metal and rubber were rationed for military use. So, the industrious teen fashioned one from scrap parts he found. When decades of running took a toll on his knees and lower back, Donald Schaet switched gears to focus solely on cycling. When the nation celebrated the war?s end in 1945, Schaet rejoiced with the purchase of a new, $39.50 English-style bike that he used to deliver newspapers and commute to school. Now 74, the East Cobb resident pedals about 3,000 to 4,000 miles a year, including more than half a dozen organized rides, and has participated in as many as 12 in one year. He once rode 200 miles in one day. Read article...
