Honored Heroes

Honored Heroes are individuals who have endured or are enduring the blood cancer batter. We are so lucky to have these special individuals as part of our Team In Training (TNT) family. They bring us hope and inspiration and they are the reason we train.

2009 Fall

Honored Hero Kate
Nike Women's Marathon Team

Kate was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma in April of 2007.  Kate is 6 year old and her birthday is May 30. She lives in Decatur with her family. She has three siblings. Jackson is 9, Ava is 4 and the family just welcomed their newest addition, Emmett! Kate's parents, Jason and Carolyn, are so excited to have Kate involved with TNT again as an Honored Hero.


Honored Hero Akaya
Cobb/Kennesaw Team

Akaya just turned six years old on May 7! She was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia in August of 2004. She lives in Smyrna with her parents and brother.

 

 

Honored Hero Andrew Johnson
Marine Corps Marathon Team

Andrew was diagnosed in August of 2004 with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. He was treated with Gleevec, a drug that was partially funded by LLS. He lives in Decatur with his wife and two year old son. Andrew is an accomplished Triathlete. Look for Andrew in the documentary about his story, "Living is Winning" which was featured at the Atlanta Film Festival. 

 

Honored Hero Tricia Hernandez
Marine Corps Marathon Team

Tricia was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2002. Her treatment included six months of chemotherapy followed by six weeks of radiation. Tricia is not only an Honored Hero, but she is also participating in her first marathon, the Marine Corps Marathon! Tricia and her partner, Kelley, live in Avondale Estates and have a two and a half year old son. 


Honored Hero Annabelle
Hike Teams

Annabelle was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma in October 2008. Annabelle just celebrated her birthday on January 3. She and her twin sister, Christine, are both four years old. Her favorite hobbies and interests are The Little Mermaid, Barbie dolls, swimming, dancing and just playing in general. She also loves books.
 
Honored Hero Chuck Corvi
Cycle Teams

Chuck was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Lymphoma in August of 1997. His birthday is May 7! He enjoys cooking, playing golf and lives in Atlanta with his wife, Cindy, who has been involved with TNT in the past as a participant and Honored Hero.

 

 

 

Honored Hero Fiona
Triathlon Teams

Fiona was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma in September 2005 when she was two years old. Fiona responded quickly to treatment and went into remission in October 2005. In December 2007 Fiona's treatment was complete. 
 

 

 

Honored Hero Kristen Mangold
Gwinnett Team

Kristen was 32 years old when she was diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma in 2007, which is a rare cancer, that is very aggressive and requires immediate treatment- she was told she would not survive. After surgery and six months of intensive chemotherapy, she is in remission - 15 months and counting! Today Kristen works full time, enjoys quilting and reading.

 

 


Honored Hero Mickey Register
North Fulton & Forsyth Team

Mickey was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in October of 2003 and she is now in the watch and wait period. Mickey is married to Andy and they are parents of a 15 year old son and twin daughters that are 11 years old. Mickey enjoys cooking, photography and hiking.

 

 


Honored Hero Mollie
Augusta Teams

Mollie was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on June 17, 2008. Mollie lives in Augusta with her parents and her baby sister, Lucy. Mollie has never eaten a hamburger or a soda. Her favorite dream is that she is sliding down a rainbow. The cutest thing about Mollie is that she is gaining the tiniest hint of a Southern accent and adding the word "y'all" to her vocabulary.

Grand Canyon National Park Hike Team

Annabelle was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma in October 2008. Annabelle just celebrated her birthday on January 3. She and her twin sister, Christine, are both four years old.  Her favorite hobbies and interests are The Little Mermaid, Barbie dolls, swimming, dancing and just playing in general. She also loves books.

 

Honored Hero Carter
Siege on Fort Yargo Team

Carter was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia in May 2008.  His birthday is June 8. Carter is seven years old and is in first grade. Carter enjoys Falcons football, basketball and  reading. Carter's parents, Eric and Christy, and his brothers, Max and Beau, live in Cobb County.

 

 

Honored Hero Catherine
America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride and Fletcher Flyer Century Teams

Catherine was diagnosed in March 2005 with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. She relapsed on October 16 and underwent  treatment at Emory, but is now doing very well. Catherine and her husband, Julian, are an amazing couple who are dedicated to the mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. They live in Atlanta with their son, Lawrence.

Honored Hero Cyndi
Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego and Rock 'n' Roll Seattle Marathon and Half Marathon Teams

Cyndi was diagnosed with Follicular Lymphoma in May 2007. Her current  protocol is watchful waiting. Cyndi's birthday is on March 12. Cyndi loves to travel and enjoys cooking, reading and spending time with friends and family. Cyndi is excited to get to know all of the participants this season.

 

 

Honored Hero Ethan
Augusta Teams

Ethan, a 17 year old senior at Greenbrier High School was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on July 31, 2001. He received four and a half years of chemotherapy between August 2001 and February 2006. Today, Ethan is 3 years cancer free! Ethan's hobbies include politics, hiking, golf, tennis, and biking. He is interested in political science and law and hope to study these topics in college.

 

 

Honored Hero Janet
Aflac Iron Girl Women's Triathlon and Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon Teams

Janet was diagnosed with NHL Follicular in April 2002. Janet and her husband, Nick, have two children, Jennifer and Blair. Janet enjoys reading, walking, her neighborhood bible study and being with family and friends. Janet is very thankful for the gift of life and the time and effort of the TNT participants to help find a cure. 

Honored Hero Jordan
Savannah Teams

Jordan was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocyctic Leukemia in July 2008. He has completed his induction therapy which included chemotherapy and is now in the consolidation therapy phase, which includes 10 weeks of daily treatments to be followed by two months of chemotherapy. He is anxious to begin his freshman year at South Effingham County High School. Jordan turned 15 on January 30 and likes to play tennis and basketball. He also likes to fish, play piano and percussion instruments.

Honored Hero Michelle
Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego and Rock 'n' Roll Seattle Marathon and Half Marathon Northside teams

Michelle was diagnosed in July 2005 with Follicular Lymphoma. Her last treatment was February 1, 2006 and she is 100% in remission! She has a wonderful husband, Michael, and four fantastic children Blake, Courtnie, Brandon and Jacob. Michelle teaches pre-school and enjoys everyday with her family.
