National Spokespeople

Team In Training (TNT) has more than 1,100 coaches working throughout the United States and Canada to help get participants in proper shape to complete a marathon, half-marathon, hiking adventure, triathlon or 100-mile (century) bicycle ride. They are a resource for every facet of the TNT experience, from purchasing the right apparel to improving racing technique and diet.

Coaches travel with their teams to each event and are along the race route to encourage and guide the athletes. The program's head coaches include some of the nation's top endurance sports innovators.

Marty LiquoriMarty Liquori - National Chairman & Spokesperson
Marty has served as national spokesperson for TNT since 1990 and has been an influence in the world of sports and fitness for three decades. After running a sub-four-minute mile in high school, he became the top-ranked miler and 5,000-meter runner in the world. In Mexico City, in 1968, he became the youngest person to participate in the Olympic 1,500-meter finals.

Marty conceived of the idea of a sporting goods store that sold only athletic shoes. He created the Athletic Attic chain, which grew to 250 stores by 1980.

As a broadcaster, Marty has covered six Olympics, 25 New York City Marathons, eight Ironman triathlons and numerous other sports events. He is currently host and producer of Saucony Running and Racing on ESPN.

"I was asked to be (TNT) chairman because of my work as an ESPN commentator and former world class runner," he said. "Ironically, a few months later I was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. I was now beyond just volunteering. I realized that the work of LLS through Team In Training was helping me.  I learned how important this program is rather quickly. Fortunately, others had been working on these cures before I came along."

John "The Penguin" Bingham
John Bingham is an author, columnist, and comic, and the spokesperson for the slow-running movement. Known to his flock as "The Penguin" for his waddling pace Bingham has, for two decades, encouraged runners of all shapes, sizes, and speeds to follow his example and change their lives for the better by taking up the sport.

His popular column The Penguin Chronicles ran for 14 years in Runner's World magazine and now appears in Competitor magazine. Bingham has written several books including An Accidental Athlete, a memoir that tells for the first time the story of how Bingham took up running at the age of 43 to become the unlikely icon of today's running boom. Bingham is spokesman for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training program and voice of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon series.
