David Garrity: Triathlon Coach (Wendy's International Triathlon)
David is entering his fourth season as the Triathlon and Run Coach for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society?s Team In Training. He is also the Lead Mechanical volunteer for Pelotonia, and the Finish Line Director for the Columbus Marathon. He has been competing in endurance sports for over 10 years, having completed 14 marathons and 2 Ironman Triathlons as well as numerous shorter distance events.
David came to compete in triathlon after racing marathons for several years. He hadn?t been on a bike in over 17 years, after being hit by a car while riding in college. He also couldn?t swim. After 13 marathons, including 5 in one year, and 3 in one month, he needed to challenge him self with Ironman. So after getting back on the bike and getting comfortable out on the roads again, the next step was to tackle the swim. Using a "head-up/ water polo" type stroke, he entered his first Sprint Tri. After spending much time hanging on the kayaks, he was the very last one out of the water?needless to say, that style stroke wasn?t going to work in open water. After joining a master swim program and learning to swim freestyle. The next year Coach Garrity entered his second sprint tri and took an hour off his time. He completed Lake Placid Ironman the following year.
